Ossining, New York
While it may be a little hard to remember how to spell its name, Ossining certainly is a memorable town. The name is derived from the name of the Native American community that originally resided in the region, the Sint Sinck. In 1881, the town nearly changed its name to Garfield Plains to honor the recently deceased President, James Garfield, but eventually decided to keep Ossining after an objection by the neighboring city, White Plains. Today, the town is home to the infamous Sing-Sing prison, and the less notorious Jug Tavern and Scarborough Historic District, which are both on the National Register of Historic Places.
While Ossining may have a rich history, it also has a bright future. It was recently ranked as the second-best community to live in Westchester by Westchester Magazine, and the kindness of its residents have helped it earn the nickname, the “volunteer-spirited town”.
